Finding calm (Olympic and otherwise) through knitting

So what gives? Shouldn’t Koskinen be whispering last-minute tips in his snowboarders’ ears? Praying? Crossing his glove-less fingers instead of using them to knit and to purl? Of course not. What could be more calm-inducing than knitting?

“It is a nice, Finnish thing,” Koskinen says. “It means no unnecessary chit-chat is needed.”

About half of the Finnish team’s 102 members knit. Word has it that they’re working on a blanket for the newborn son of their presidential couple.

“Everyone is knitting a little square, and then we will join them together,” he says, adding as he holds up his creation, “I got a bit carried away, so … a rectangle.”
