‘There is no beauty without good health’

Nagpur: There can be no beauty without health, no matter what cosmetics you use. This philosophy is what prompted Dolly Kumar, director of Cosmic Nutracos Solutions Pvt Ltd, a Rs100 crore company, to switch to health food and supplements industry.

An alumna of the Cosmetic Technology department of LAD and SRP College from city, Kumar helped build global brands like Colorbar, Skin Formula 9, Assure in India. She also spearheaded operations to bring Ancorotti, Italy’s leading colour cosmetic brand, into India. She then turned to her own venture, Gaia, which is already making waves in the health food and supplements industry as one of the top health and wellness food brands in India.

“After 15 years with the cosmetic industry, I entered into health foods and supplements as I believe that without good health no person can feel or look beautiful. I have six factories and now employ food formulators and food technologists in Gaia. In fact, I realized the silent entrepreneurial ability in me while working as an assistant manager at Colorbar Cosmetics,” she said talking of Gaia, named after the goddess Earth in Greek mythology.

Basically into retail branding, Kumar, 43, is a first generation entrepreneur based in Delhi and is competing with brands like Kellog’s and Nestle’s. She is into products like green tea, muesli, oats, multigrain cookies, energy bars, energy drinks (especially based on Vitamin C) and even trail mixes made mainly from nuts of various types. Kumar said her company was also into contract manufacturing for companies like Patanjali, Apollo Pharmacy, Mediplus etc.

In seven years after the launch of Gaia in 2008, she has not looked back. After her products hit the shelves in 2009-10. She made Gaia a national brand but she admits she never had her career journey planned. Her enthusiasm and passion for her work shows up in her conversation. “I am working on Gaia lite and Gaia Sports brands for diabetics and weight watchers,” she said.

Kumar stated Gaia products were available at about 20,000 stores across India. She has about 500 employees and considers herself lucky they were among the best in the field. “I believe in my dreams. And that gives me the strength to convert them into reality,” she said, grit and determination writ large on her face.
