Things to do in Abilene next week: Tips for healthy living at the library

The Abilene Public Library will host two free programs promoting weight loss and nutrition next week:

► At 5 p.m. Monday at the South Branch, in the Mall of Abilene, certified lifestyle and weight managment specialist Tabatha Torralballa will speak about her own weight journey. Torralballa lost 150 pounds through a combination of changes to her lifestyle and mindset.

► At 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Mockingbird Branch, 1326 N. Mockingbird Lane, LaRonna Jones of the Texas AgriLife Extension Service will present the statewide nutrition education program “Better Living for Texans.” The program will include interactive segments and free food samples.

Back-to-school

► A back-to-school bash will be open from 2-6 p.m. Aug. 18 at Life Church, 2465 Old Anson Road. School supplies, music, vendors and a resource fair will be available.

► A back-to-school bash will be conducted from 6-8 p.m. Aug. 18 at the Alameda Community Center, 650 Corsicana St. Hair-styling, school supplies and school uniforms will be available. For information, 325-518-3698.

Movies around town

► As a part of the Summer Family Film Series, a showing of “The Lego Batman Movie” rated PG, will begin at 2 p.m. Aug. 18 at the Paramount Theatre, 352 Cypress St. Tickets are $2. For tickets or information, go to paramount-abilene.org.

► A free showing of “Justice League,” rated PG-13, will begin at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Mockingbird Branch of the Abilene Public Library, 1326 N. Mockingbird Lane.

► A free showing of “Meet the Robinsons,” rated G, will begin at 3 p.m. Aug. 18 at the Abilene Public Library, 202 Cedar St.

► A reading of the children’s book “Frederick,” by Leo Lionni, will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday at The Grace Museum, 102 Cypress St. Registration is $5, with a limited number of copies of the book available for an additional $5. To register, go to thegracemuseum.org.

► A dance featuring The Last Dance Band will be 7-10 p.m. Aug. 17 at Eller Hall, 201 Mesquite St. Admission at the door is $10 for adults, $5 for children age 12-17 and free for children under 12.

► The Abilene Kennel Club will conduct a “Responsible Dog Ownership Day” from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 18 at the Mall of Abilene. Information and activities will promote ways to care for pets.

► SWEETWATER — A dance featuring Santa Fe Band will begin at 8 p.m. Aug. 18 at VFW Post 2479, 216 Avenger Field Road. Admission is $10.
