Animals Can Replay Past Events

Neuroscientists at Indiana University have reported the first evidence that animals can mentally replay past events from memory. The discovery could help advance the development of new drugs to treat Alzheimer’s disease. “The reason we’re interested in animal memory isn’t only to understand animals, but rather to develop new models of memory that match up with the types of memory impaired in human diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease,” said Crystal, a professor in the IU Bloomington College of Arts and Sciences’ Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences and director of the IU Bloomington Programme in Neuroscience.

Fasting and stem cells’ functioning

As people age, their intestinal stem cells begin to lose their ability to regenerate. These stem cells are the source for all new intestinal cells, so this decline can make it more difficult to recover from gastrointestinal infections or other intestine-related diseases. This age-related loss of stem cell function can be reversed by a 24-hour fast, according to a new study. The researchers found that fasting dramatically improves stem cells’ ability to regenerate, in both aged and young mice. “Fasting has many effects in the intestine, which include boosting regeneration as well as potential uses in any type of ailment that impinges on the intestine,” says Omer Yilmaz, an MIT assistant professor of biology.

good diet to lower hearing loss risk in women

In a new study, researchers from Brigham and Women’s Hospital examined the relation between three different diets and risk of developing hearing loss, and found that eating a healthy diet is associated with a lower risk of acquired hearing loss in women. The three diets were — Alternate Mediterranean diet (AMED), Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH), and the Alternative Healthy Eating Index-2010 (AHEI-2010) in 70,966 women in the Nurses’ Health Study II who were followed for 22 years. “Interestingly, we observed that those following an overall healthy diet had a lower risk of moderate or worse hearing loss,” said Sharon Curhan, MD, an epidemiologist in the Channing Division of Network Medicine at BWH and added “Eating well contributes to overall good health, and it may also be helpful in reducing the risk of hearing loss.”

Manipulating Gut Bacteria With Seaweed

Gut bacteria thrive on the food we eat, they provide essential nutrients that keep us healthy, repel pathogens and help guide our immune responses. Researchers at the Stanford University School of Medicine have shown that it’s possible to favour the engraftment of one bacterial strain over others by manipulating the mice’s diet. The researchers also have shown it’s possible to control how much a bacterium grows in the intestine by calibrating the amount of a specific carbohydrate in each mouse’s water or food. “We’re all endowed with a microbial community in our guts that assembled in a chaotic manner during our first few years of life,” said Justin Sonnenburg, PhD, associate professor of microbiology and immunology.

EATING Dark chocolate LOWERS stress

New research shows there might be health benefits to eating certain types of dark chocolate. Findings from two studies show that eating dark chocolate having high concentration of cacao (minimally 70 per cent cacao, 30 per cent organic cane sugar) has positive effects on stress levels, inflammation, mood, memory and immunity. This is the first time the effect has been studied in human subjects to determine how cacao can support cognitive, endocrine and cardiovascular health. “These studies show us that the higher the concentration of cacao, the more positive the impact on cognition, memory, mood, immunity and other beneficial effects,” said Lee S Berk, associate dean of research affairs, school of Allied Health Professions.
