Living for almost a century is bananas.

Well at least it is for Tokoroa’s Joan Bowring who celebrates her 99th birthday on Wednesday. .

While Joan, who lives at Victoria Place Rest Home, doesn’t know for sure why she’s lived so long, everyday she does have a little ritual.

Rain, hail, or shine she eats a banana.

“I eat a lot of bananas,” she said.

According to Statistics New Zealand, New Zealanders spend more on bananas than any other fruit.

“I don’t like them green but I don’t like them squishy, I like them firm. I have one everyday and I just eat them whether they are good or bad for me.”

But good they appear to be for Joan who has never had any major illness.

“I have never been in hospital for anything besides getting a new hip,” she said.

She also still likes to get up every morning at 6.30am to make her bed.

“Getting dressed and showering is getting a bit of an effort, I have to get help, but when I get up there are not many about and they are only just changing shifts,” she said.

“Walking is an effort, I don’t walk, I waddle, but I do what I can,” she laughed.

Joan, who worked at Hetheringtons Drapery in Te Aroha for eight years from the age of fifteen until she got married, said she’s enjoyed her long life.

She’s lived in Tokoroa for almost sixty years where she raised two children. She now has three grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

“I have had a good life and I have done most things,” she said.

She said she never thought she’d live as long as she has. Her father died when he was 51 and her mother in her 60′s.

“I never thought about it actually, you just go on and on and on,” she said.

“It must be the bananas,” she laughed.

AUT senior lecturer and registered dietitian Doctor Caryn Zinn said while bananas have fibre, vitamins and minerals, she suspects there’s more to what Joan eats and how she lives that has resulted in her age.

“I would very much doubt that the banana alone has much to do with this. However, the mind is a powerful thing and if she believes it’s the banana then let her believe it and hopefully it will take her into triple digits,” she said.

“I would not rush out to ‘prescribe’ daily bananas for longevity though. Fruit is high in sugar and too much fruit is not a good thing either. Of course this is all in context with the rest of the diet /lifestyle.”

According to Statistics New Zealand, New Zealanders spend more on bananas than any other fruit. On average 18kg a year or roughly two bananas a week.
